INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE (ICE)
converts fuel to power in a 3 step process
- AIR MIXING DEVICE
It first mixes fuel with air in a correct proportion. This is via a simple aero-mechanical device which is the carburetor or an electronically controlled system as a fuel injector
There is a correct proportion of air to fuel for an efficient combustion.
If there is too much air, the mixture is lean.
Too little, the mixture is thick.
When the air varies in pressure like in cold mornings or high altitude, the carburetor preset tuning affects the mix proportion.
- ENGINE
The engine sucks in the air fuel mix, ignites with a spark plug.
As the fuel explodes, it pushes a piston that transfers the power to the driving wheel.
- EXHAUST/MUFFLER
The muffler then ejects the combustion byproducts-
CO2 and H2O.
If there is incomplete combustion, Carbon monoxide (smog) is also emitted.
If there is unused fuel after the air mixing device, it is released into the atmosphere as OH (hydrcarbon fumes) even when the engine is not running.
